Charlotte Douglas International Airport Expansion - Concourse A
To accommodate the continued growth of one of the United States busiest airports, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has implemented an ambitious plan that includes the phased expansion of Concourse A.
As part of Destination CLT, the airport’s strategic investment plan, the phased expansion Concourse A was designed to accommodate significant projected passenger growth, improve passenger, increase passenger amenities, and streamline airline operations.
Concourse A serves as CLT’s “hometown concourse,” welcoming local travelers with a striking first impression along the main approach to the terminal. The signature roofline of the concourse, shaped to suggest an airfoil in takeoff, rises to the north to maximize daylight and provides panoramic views of the airfield.
The long span roofs of the Phase I and Phase II Expansions are supported by CAST CONNEX custom designed cast steel column base nodes as well as the pre-engineered Architectural Taper + Universal Pin Connectors (ART + UPC) combination of standardized steel castings.

The base nodes each weigh over 4,000-pounds and brace the structure against wind, seismic, and blast loading. The design of the cast steel column base also ensures the component will provide a 2-hour fire resistance rating without the need for intumescent coating of the casting. CAST CONNEX Universal Pin Connectors™ + Architectural Tapers™ were also used in the AESS frames and trusses. CAST CONNEX’s products contribute to the building’s structural resilience and architectural expression.
For the Phase I and Phase II Expansions of Concourse A, CAST CONNEX designed and supplied robust custom cast steel column base nodes. The column base nodes weigh over 4,000-pounds (1,815-kilograms) and brace the structure against wind, seismic, and blast loading. The unique design of the architecturally exposed column base nodes ensures the custom steel castings will provide a 2-hour fire resistance rating without the need of an additional intumescent coating system.
CAST CONNEX standardized ART + UPC steel castings were also used in the architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) frames and trusses of the Phase I and Phase II Expansions. The pre-engineered ART + UPC steel casting combination contributes to both the structural resilience and architectural expression of Concourse A.
As an industry leader in cast steel technology, CAST CONNEX is proud to have been selected as the casting designer and supplier of precision engineered structural steel castings for both phases of the CLT Concourse A Expansion. The collaborative design between CAST CONNEX and the Phase I Expansion and Phase II Expansion project teams demonstrates how thoughtful design and advanced structural systems can elevate both the performance and the aesthetic experience of landmark aviation infrastructure.
